The Mexican forward would happily welcome his
compatriot at the Liga club as rumors continue to swirl about the
Barcelona midfielder's future.
Carlos Vela has weighed in on Jonathan Dos Santos’ complicated club situation by indicating he’d be delighted to have his compatriot alongside him at Real Sociedad.
“I’d love Jonathan to come,” Vela said in a press conference on Tuesday. “When someone from your country arrives it’s always good, and what’s more he’s a friend.”
Vela went on to praise Dos Santos’ play and added that the fact he is at Barcelona says a lot about his talent. Cancun-born Vela admitted – after speaking to Dos Santos - that the decision isn’t necessarily in the player’s
hands, with new Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino still setting his plans for new season and Real Sociedad’s patience running out, according to various reports.
The problem over Dos Santos’ future has been further complicated by his solid recent performances as a starter in Barcelona’s preseason, and with Thiago Alcantara gone and Cesc Fabregas the subject of intense interest from Manchester United, the midfielder may get more minutes in La Liga.
In the wake of the recent matches, ESPN Deportes and Mundo Deportivo both reported Wednesday that Dos Santos is highly regarded by Martino and that the Argentine is keen to keep the Mexican. The player himself told Sport on Monday that Real Sociedad is a good option, but that other teams are also interested. He added that his goal this season is to get more playing time in order to nudge his way into the Mexico squad for Brazil 2014.
“I need more minutes to get on the list, to be important for Barcelona or another team,” Dos Santos said. “It’s what I’m lacking at the moment to aspire to be in Brazil.”
As for Vela’s place with the national team, he again refused to completely close the door on a future call-up, but stressed he has to focus on performing consistently with Real Sociedad.
