Paulinho plays like Lampard, says Villas-Boas

The Tottenham manager has heaped praise on his new signing, who has indicated the Portuguese boss played a huge part in bringing him to Spurs from Corinthians this summer

Andre Villas-Boas has welcomed comparisons between Tottenham midfielder Paulinho and Frank Lampard, and backed the Brazilian to score goals for Spurs this season.

The 25-year-old is a new addition to a new-look midfield at White Hart Lane this summer, having secured a €20 million move from Corinthians at the start of July.

Paulinho expressed his delight at being likened to the Chelsea legend by fellow South American Juan Roman Riquelme, and the Portuguese feels Lampard is a fantastic role model on

which to base his game.

"I think Frank is a player that he [Paulinho] holds in high esteem," the Spurs boss told OMNISPORT.

"He is a fantastic all-round footballer and has reached so many trophies and so much success in his career. For Paulinho to have him as a reference is the best example that you can have.

"He is that type of midfielder – all-rounder with a smell for goal – and I think we will see him score this season for Tottenham."

The Brazil international has discussed his style of play with Villas-Boas in the build-up to his first Premier League season, and revealed his admiration for the former Chelsea manager, highlighting him as a factor in his arrival.

"Andre Villas-Boas is very well regarded in Brazil and he was part of the reason why I joined Tottenham," the midfielder told The Guardian.

"We have been talking about how he wants me to play. It makes things easier that we speak the same language."
