Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand is determined to nail down a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge this season.
The
24-year-old made 38 appearances in all competitions last term,
providing essential back-up to Ashley Cole as the west London club
competed on multiple fronts and played over 60 games across the season.
However,
the England international has started just 20 Premier League games in
seven years at Stamford Bridge and is hoping to impress Jose Mourinho in
order to secure a regular place.
"It's been a good preseason for
me and I'm pleased to have been
involved as much as I have," he told
the club's official website.
"Hopefully I can increase that playing time (on Saturday) which will put me in good stead for the start of the season.
"It's
important to have competition for places and it brings the best out in
the team. With any top-class side you need to have that in every
position.
"I've been waiting for the Premier League to start for a
while because there's nothing more satisfying than knowing you've got
three points after winning a tough game."
Chelsea has won all but
one of it preseason games - the one defeat coming to Real Madrid in the
International Champions Cup final - with its Premier League campaign
beginning at home to Hull City on August 18.
