Man Utd defender Smalling looks to add attack to repertoire

The England international is hoping to improve his proficiency in front of the goal this season after netting against Kitchee in a friendly on Monday.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling wants to improve his goalscoring record this season after netting in his side's 5-2 friendly win over Kitchee on Monday.

The 23-year-old rose admirably to head home a Tom Cleverley cross in the 22nd minute at the Hong Kong Stadium to help set up a comfortable victory for David Moyes's men. The youngster now wants to reproduce his performance in the upcoming Premier League season, feeling that he gets enough opportunities in and around the net to do

better.

"It was difficult - all of the games have been difficult in this heat - but it will hopefully stand us in good stead during the season," Smalling told MUTV after the match. "It was nice to pop up with a goal, too, but, to be fair, I probably should have got a hat trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that.

"I was waiting for it [the goal], I have been due one because I didn't get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more."

The former Fulham defender also admitted that he is glad to be involved in United's pre-season tour this summer after missing out last term due to injury.

"Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with preseason because I didn't get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better," Smalling said.
