The Primeira Liga champion stated its intentions for
the season ahead with a blistering first-half display in an emphatic
victory over Vitoria Guimaraes.
Paulo Fonseca insists that Porto is full of confidence after his side cruised to a 3-0 victory over Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese Supercup in Aveiro.First-half efforts from new signing Lica, Jackson Martinez and Lucho Gonzalez saw the reigning league champion effectively wrap up the win before the break.
Fonseca was quick to point out that this was another trophy to add to the collection.
“I wish to say that today Porto consolidated its status as the club with the most titles in Portugal,” he told the club's official website.
“It was an excellent performance at our end. It wasn’t inability from our opponents, we merited the result .”
It only took summer acquisition Lica four minutes to open the scoring as he tapped home unmarked from six yards after captain Lucho Gonzalez had squared the ball across goal.
Martinez then rose to meet Silvestre Valera’s cross to nod the ball home via the post, before Gonzalez completed the scoring, firing through the legs of Vitoria keeper Douglas in first-half stoppage time.
“We reinforced our confidence tonight for the upcoming season,” added Fonseca, who was clearly impressed by his side’s ruthless streak which the team displayed in seeing off the Portuguese Cup winner.
Debutant Lica was also thrilled as he got his first taste of silverware in a Porto shirt, but would not be swayed into giving targets for the season ahead.
“I am very happy with this victory and I will celebrate it with my teammates,” stated the former Estoril forward, adding “coming to this club, scoring a goal and winning the Supercup is a dream come true.
“But it is too early to talk about expectations for the season.”
Porto kicks off its title defense away to Vitoria Setubal on Aug. 18.
